Waterworks Site Development Plans

In collaboration with existing efforts to link Grant County communities via road, bike trails and walkways, the Five Points initiative will support and expand upon county-wide development in the outdoor recreation sector. Connections linked through biking, hiking and horse-riding trails offer extensive programming opportunities and health benefits. The proximity to Historic Fort Bayard will increase tourism activity and cultural programming prospects, as well as enhance connections to the Gila National Forest, Gila River, and Aldo Leopold Wilderness, for locals and tourists to further explore the innumerable natural assets of Southwest New Mexico.

Phase one of this initiative will begin with the restoration and renovation of the Waterworks outbuildings and open space. The Waterworks site will offer camping opportunities for locals and visitors and will act as a way station for CDT hikers, with amenities such as composting toilets, solar showers, an outdoor kitchen, a small camp store for visitors and on-site bike rentals. Anticipated completion date for Phase One: Winter 2021.

Additional plans will include: An outdoor Education and Event Pavilion, a cultural-egological-historical museum within the Waterworks building, and a formal trail along Silva Creek, linking the Waterworks site to downtown Silver City.

AmeriCorp at the Waterworks Site

The Waterworks site has hosted three groups of AmeriCorp participants over the past 2 years. These volunteers have assisted us with the renovation of the Waterworks site and structures. We are grateful for all of their hard work!
